Our Story

When I first dreamt up Yantrakart,

My goal was to create something that could positively impact the world. With this ambition in mind, three years ago, I began collaborating with a Fair Trade cooperative of female artisans from Rishikesh – an Indian city close to my heart - by offering them skills, mentorship, and training opportunities. My ultimate aim was for these ladies would be able to craft our Mala designs while gaining access to fair wages and safe working conditions, as well as being empowered enough through their earnings to support themselves financially and eventually lift entire communities out of poverty!

Our Didis

With a rich culture and traditional heritage, rural India has come up with an ingenious nickname for married women - Didi! Meaning sister in Hindi, it's considered polite to refer to them by this name. Despite the challenging socioeconomic conditions faced by many families here, these housewives are able to use their skillful craftsmanship in making handmade malas that contribute to and support their households.

Husbands of our beloved Didis are providing for their families by hawking fruits and vegetables at the local farmers' market. This makes Mala making an invaluable source of income, as it covers not only basic necessities but also educational expenses for children. During COVID, when most businesses were closed due to safety regulations, we provided these women with raw materials and designs so they could work from home - thus proving this model's ability to prosper despite difficult circumstances!

Thanks for your business!

Our Team!

The women we have worked with have been deprived of so much more than just poverty. Some even endured domestic violence, which can take a toll on someone’s confidence and financial independence. Many hadn't received any formal education; their only known trade was the household duties they completed each day. But because of your support, our organization has helped to expand these ladies' skillset—we've taken it from basic beading principles all the way up to meaningful job opportunities! We thank you for believing in what is possible.

With every bead intricately hand-crafted by a team of local artisans affectionately known as Didis', our shop in the sacred birthplace of Yoga, Rishikesh, India, celebrates tradition and culture through its handmade mala beads, wrist malas, and jewelry. Drawing on age-old knowledge while blessed daily by the mystical Mother Ganges river - we are proud to offer unique, custom intricate designs that bridge ancient wisdom with modern style.
